“Short Cut” in the MCA/Chicago Plaza

Short-Cut

^ Short Cut Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, 2003

I couln’t find anything about this piece on the Internet in the usual ways. So I just called the MCA and got the title & artist. Now, if anyone searches for “Who is the artist that make the jacknifed car pulling a trailer camper that is poping exploding wrecking accident bursting through the MCA Chicago front steps plaza concrete tiles?” Then they might pull up this page and see just who did make it.

Massive Change

Massive Change

^ Exhibition poster derived from Bruce Mau’s visionary design book of the same name.

Bruce Mau is the most widely-known graphic designer in Canada. But as a celebrity, most folks don’t know he’s a graphic designer. Americans barely know that Michael Graves is an architect or that Philip Starck is an industrial designer, or that Karim Rashid is a fashion designer. We do know they make stuff to buy at Target. Anyway, Bruce made waves with his ambitious books, calling for immediate change on a global scale.

At the MCA, they didn’t charge admission because the installation in progress was occupying 40% of their gallery space. It was fun, though. I got to see them installing the exhibit and got a contact buzz from the adhesives. Then Dan Flavin’s Pink & Gold full room installation was that much more magnificent.
